This election is about jobs.
The jobless rate in the Las Vegas area rose to 13.8 percent, up from 13.1 percent in December. (Mar 8, 2010 By Sandra Chereb, Associated Press)
When jobs are available, people can afford to buy homes and everything else they need. When they have a job they can pay the taxes that support schools, public safety and all the other programs needed by the less fortunate among us. People with jobs contribute to the state budget rather than draw from it with unemployment checks and welfare support.
We need to do all we can to support business and make Nevada the best place on earth for business. Everything else will then fall into place. New businesses will create jobs and cause the whole Nevada economy to turn around. We certainly have the empty stores and shops available for additional businesses.
The government does not create jobs, business creates jobs.
We need programs to encourage businesses to relocate here. That means reducing or eliminating taxes and fees on business. We should start with ending the ridiculous payroll tax (Modified Business Tax) that actually charges employers for creating jobs.
We should provide fair and even tax laws rather than picking out some industries for extra taxes or buy their campaign donations with reduced taxes just for them. It's time to end the "Politics as usual" mentality. Virtually every major problem will be solved or at least greatly reduced if Nevada will encourage businesses to start up here or relocate here.
Major education groups point out that Nevada spends less on schools (per student) than almost any other state. That is a terrible statistic. While throwing money at a problem doesn't necessarily solve it, having more money available would certainly increase the probability of our children getting a better education. The real question is, where do we find it? Employed people pay taxes!
Nevada has no shortage of other problems that need adjustment or correction. Most however will be addressed automatically when the tax base returns to normal. We do not need to raise taxes and fees, we just need to have employed citizens. This election is all about jobs!
